ALsS, 1837-1856, to Aaron Ogden Dayton.

Four letters to his cousin concerning steamboating. The first, 10 May 1837, describes the first successful demonstration of John Ericsson's screw propellor. The second, 12 August 1841, gives a technical assessment of the potential of one particular model steam engine. The third, 30 April 1852, concerns patent applications and a shipment of parts or supplies from Ogden to Dayton. In the last, 1 September 1856, Ogden reflects on his achievements and the growth of marine steam power, and recalls a conversation with Stephen Decatur about the use of steamships in naval warfare.
